The Seattle Fishermen's Memorial

Established in 1985, this charitable non-profit is devoted to promoting safety in the fishing fleet and easing the emotional and financial burden experienced by surviving family members of fishermen lost at sea.

One of SFM’s most visible projects is the bronze and stone monument at Seattle's Fishermen's Terminal. Dedicated in 1988, it was made possible by generous contributions and many years of work by Seattle's commercial fishing community. The sculpture, and the bronze name plaques at its base, memorialize more than 675 local commercial fishermen and women who have lost their lives while at work.

More than a tribute to the industry and its members, the monument fills a special need for those left behind. In many instances, men and women who die at sea simply vanish, leaving their loved ones without a trace or a goodbye. This site provides a place of reverence and recognition, where family and friends can visit  and leave flowers, reflect and heal.

Since the project's completion, the mission of Seattle Fishermen's Memorial has expanded to provide grief support, safety training and the fostering of community around those in need. These important activities require both donations and support from business and indivuals in the community. Two major events fund their endeavors—the Fishermen's Fall Festival and an annual Auction Banquet in November. This SeafoodFest Kick-Off Party makes three.
