HISTORY

It all begins with an idea.

The festival also includes an Alder-smoked salmon BBQ, which has become a staple of the event and a highlight for many festival attendees.

Beyond its cultural significance and entertainment value, Ballard Seafoodfest also plays an important role in supporting the local community. The festival is produced by the Ballard Alliance (formerly the Ballard Chamber of Commerce) and organized and run by volunteers. All donations and proceeds from the salmon BBQ go toward supporting community initiatives and programs administered by the Ballard Alliance.

Whether you're a seafood lover, a fan of live music and art, or simply looking for a fun way to connect with the Ballard community, Ballard Seafoodfest is the must-do event of the summer.

Ballard Seafoodfest is an annual festival held in the Ballard neighborhood of Seattle, Washington. The festival's origins can be traced back to 1971 when leaders from Ballard's industrial and fishing community joined forces with the Ballard Elks to start SeafoodFest to promote the neighborhood's fishing industry and draw attention to the area's Scandinavian heritage. The event began as a two-hour barbecue to raise money for a financially strapped Chamber of Commerce and officially began in 1974.

The festival was a hit and has since grown into a highly anticipated event that draws thousands of visitors yearly. The festival celebrates the community's Scandinavian and maritime roots and has become a beloved summer tradition for locals and visitors alike.

Over the years, Ballard Seafoodfest has evolved and expanded, incorporating more activities, entertainment, and food vendors to cater to a larger audience. However, at its core, the festival remains focused on showcasing the best of Ballard's seafood offerings and celebrating the community's unique cultural heritage.

Today, the festival features a diverse range of seafood dishes from local restaurants and vendors, as well as live music performances, art exhibits, craft vendors, and family-friendly activities.
